The best men’s fragrances for every occasion

My favorite colognes and perfumes, from earthy to floral to everything in between

by Patrick Janelle

Though it’s chic—and très français—to have a signature fragrance that one commits to for life, my personality doesn’t lend itself to such consistency. Instead of routine, I prefer constant change. That’s why I have a large collection of favorite fragrances, with one to match every possible mood or occasion. Whether a masculine, earthy scent for cozying up in a wintertime hideaway, a sensual, seductive fragrance for a night out on the town, or a lush, floral bouquet for a vibrant spring morning, here are a few I would suggest based on their most fitting occasion.

For a sexy night in the city

1. Frédéric Malle MONSIEUR

When I’m in for a seductive, elegant evening on the town, I spritz myself with this patchouli-forward scent. I love that Frederic Malle is one of the few brands that gives credit to the perfumer; this virile yet artistic fragrance is by Bruno Jovanovic.

For a snowy ski weekend

2. Diptyque Tam Dao Eau de Parfum

With notes of milky sandalwood, this earthy bottle is my go-to for cold weather jaunt to the white-capped mountains. It reminds me of coming off the slopes and warming up in the ski chalet by the fire.

For daytime activities

3. Tom Ford Oud Minérale

Whether I’m on a hike, by the sea, or in the city streets, this fresh, ethereal fragrance is ideal for casual daytime activities. Fresh, breezy, and ocean-like, it moves easily from place to place.

For a warm-weather vacation

4. Xinú Perfumes Monstera

Made with the fruit and leaves of the beautiful monstera plant, this strong, jungly scent feels rich, exotic, and leafy. I like to wear it for a hot, sunny morning by the pool.

For a serene moment of meditation

5. Sigil Scent Prima Materia

Ancient perfumery techniques and entirely natural ingredients are used to create Sigil Scent’s gender-neutral, outdoor-inspired fragrances. Infused with vetiver, oakmoss, neroli, white sage, Prima Materia is complex and woody with fresh citrus notes, which has the effect of transporting me to a relaxing, cedar-clad spa.

For post-red eye travel

6. Fueguia Sudestada

After an overnight flight, I need a refreshing, energizing scent so I can maximize my travel day without feeling sleepy. With elements of tobacco and cedarwood, this fragrance is spicy yet still bright and invigorating.
